South Carolina Treasurer Curtis Loftis Recognizes Dixie High School Teacher Amanda “Mandy” Hannah as Educator of the Month
Abbeville accountant-turned-teacher shares passion for business and financial literacy with students
COLUMBIA, S.C. (DATE) — South Carolina State Treasurer Curtis Loftis has recognized Amanda “Mandy” Hannah of Dixie High School as the (MONTH) Educator of the Month for the South Carolina Financial Literacy Master Teacher Program, an initiative created to increase the number of educators teaching personal finance across the state.
“It’s gratifying to see how creative our South Carolina Financial Literacy Master Teachers like Mandy Hannah are in developing lessons that improve students’ ability to manage their money,” Treasurer Loftis said. “Imparting vital financial skills such as saving, investing, building strong credit, and responsibly repaying debt provides students with important stepping stones toward a stronger financial future.”
The South Carolina Financial Literacy Master Teacher Program provides financial incentives to K–12 educators who demonstrate expertise in personal finance education and a passion for sharing that knowledge with fellow teachers. Since 2020, the program has offered specialized training and free curriculum resources to help expand financial literacy instruction in schools across South Carolina. The program is sponsored by Future Scholar, South Carolina’s 529 College Savings Plan, in partnership with SC Economics.
A Greenwood–Abbeville native, Hannah began her career in accounting and finance. She earned an associate degree in accounting from Piedmont Technical College and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Lander University. After briefly working in public accounting, she served for more than 20 years as the director of finance for a local nonprofit organization.
Motivated by her faith and a desire to serve students, Hannah later transitioned into education through the Teachers of Tomorrow program to earn her teaching certification. She has since also completed a Master of Education degree from Lander University.
Hannah began teaching at Dixie High School in Due West as a long-term substitute math teacher before transitioning into business education courses. In addition to teaching personal finance and business classes, she leads students participating in Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and has guided them to compete in state and national events.
“I truly enjoy teaching business education classes and often wish these types of courses had been offered when I was in high school,” Hannah said. “I firmly believe that if I had taken a personal finance class earlier in life, I might have avoided some of the money mistakes I made. Every time I teach a personal finance lesson, it reminds me to be mindful of my own spending, and I hope it inspires my students to do the same.”
