Just another reminder that it is census time! The U.S. Census, which is conducted every 10 years, directly impacts federal funding every year for schools and communities in South Carolina. This funding impacts special education, teacher training, technology, school lunch assistance, Head Start and after-school programs. According to the Count All Kids Campaign, more than two million young children nationally were missed in the 2010 census. If we undercount children in the 2020 census, South Carolina could miss out on funding for the programs our students depend on. If you haven't completed the census yet, please do so as soon as possible!

Abbeville County School District (ACSD) is excited to hold in-person graduation for our seniors in the AHS and DHS football stadiums. ACSD will be following the guidelines suggested by the South Carolina State Department of Education (SCDE), the Governor's Executive Orders, and others. We are asking the public to support the District by following the procedures put in place to ensure the safety of all in attendance. All graduating seniors will be given guidelines for the graduation ceremony specific to their school. We encourage attendees to please read over these carefully before the ceremony. Guests will be instructed on the time gates open, where to park, where to enter and exit, etc. We will provide live-streaming of the ceremonies. AHS will hold graduation May 29, 2020 at 7:00 PM. The rain date will be May 30, 2020 at 7:00 PM. DHS will hold graduation May 28, 2020 at 6:00 PM. The rain date will be May 30, 2020 at 6:00 PM. After conferring with Abbeville Area Medical Center on the expected dates for the peak number of positive COVID-19 cases for Abbeville County and following the suggested guidelines set forth by the SCDE, the District is limiting the number of guests to 2 persons per graduate. Tickets will be required for entry. Guests will be required to maintain social distancing of 6 feet while on school campus. No one will be allowed to congregate in parking lots before and after the ceremony. All guests are encouraged to wear masks. Spectators without tickets will not be allowed on campus. An announcement was made this afternoon by Governor McMaster and State Superintendent, Molly Spearman, that SC schools will be closed through April 30. Should this timeline need to be adjusted by ending sooner or by being extended, an announcement will be made at that time. ACSD was braced for the announcement of a school closing extension as a result of the daily SCDE and State Superintendent briefings provided to district superintendents. With other decisions being made in our state and those in states like NC, it seemed to be a matter of time. I do think it gives our students, especially our seniors, a window of hope that the school closure through April 30 will have helped to flatten the curve and the month of May will usher in the possibilities of returning to school, holding prom and graduation, etc. although there are still no guarantees. ACSD is busy preparing for the second wave of providing instructional packets and eLearning plans for students. We stand ready to provide the best services possible to our students at this time. We are currently awaiting guidance from the SCDE on decisions governing some instructional components and will share and implement these once received. Our focus is on what students have already been taught and what they need between now and the end of the year in order to be prepared for the next grade level or course content in a sequence or for graduation. - Dr. Julie Fowler, ACSD Superintendent

On behalf of Dr. Fowler and the ACSD Team: We would like to applaud our administrators, teachers, and staff for preparing and distributing educational resources for our students in response to the COVID-19 school closure. Because of your hard work, ACSD students now have access to several weeks’ worth of instructional materials to use at home. We appreciate the commitment of our school personnel to provide for their pupils and to make sure the educational process continues during this time of crisis. Our cafeteria staff worked diligently this week to prepare meals for students during the school closure. Bus drivers participated by distributing meals throughout the county. Our custodians have been cleaning and sanitizing our buildings in an effort to keep everyone safe and healthy. Our district Instructional Technology and Maintenance Departments are working on projects and resolving issues as they arise. We appreciate all of your efforts to provide for our students – even with schools closed. The ACSD community rallied together to meet the needs of its students, and we are truly grateful. We remain committed to our mission of “Putting Students First.” Thank you to all! Please continue to support our students and one other during these stressful and uncertain times. Reach out to one of us if you have questions or need anything further. Finally, we want to remind everyone to heed the precautions set forth by our local, state, and government officials. Westwood Elementary School is participating in One School One Book during the month of March. There was a “kick-off” on March 2nd where 5th grade students performed a skit about the book that the students would be reading. Each student, teacher, and staff member received the book, The Lemonade War. Then, all of the students got a cup of lemonade and lemon cookies from the lemonade stand. Parents are encouraged to read the assigned chapters each night with their child. The next day, a trivia question is asked and one winner from each grade is chosen. The winners receive a bag of Lemonhead candy, a yellow bracelet, and a token to the book vending machine. Each Friday, there will be special activities such as, “wear yellow day”, a poster contest, and guests from the community to read to each class. At the end of the month, there will be a winner per grade to receive a copy of the sequel, The Lemonade Crime.

We have monitored the weather since arriving this morning. We have been in constant contact with both Greenwood and Abbeville Emergency Management, law enforcement, neighboring districts, and principals. There was never a window of opportunity to put buses on the road where students and drivers were not at risk. The storms moved slower than forecasters anticipated, which spawned tornado warnings in different parts of the county at different times in the day. We decided to dismiss as soon as the line of severe weather, which entered our county before 11:00 this morning, and had passed through the entire county. We had our first tornado warning shortly after 11:00 AM and had five schools and the District Office under a tornado warning as late as 2:00 PM this afternoon. The safety of our students remains our top priority.
